I prefer watching something provided that there is a narrative. if it's just video + music then I would find that more distracting than illustrated+text

Video with narrative - yes please, I can follow along.

Illustrated with Text - This is fine, I can work at my own pace but I may get sidetracked now and again.

Video with music playing - I can watch for entertainment sure, but I probably won't gain as much.

Written with illustrations, maybe with short videos to show particular techniques if appropriate.

Full video tutorials are harder to follow at your own pace. :)

For me, personally, I find it easier to get written descriptions of what is being done along with examples. The problem with that is you only get to see the results of the steps, not how they're actually carried out.

the step by step tutorial is good when you already have the basics of the techniques. But if you don't have a clue what you are doing, they are not entirely helpful as the chance is pretty high that they leave out (very) minor steps which are clear to the artist but not to the reader.
The video tutorial doesn't leave out anything unless the artist uses many shortcuts and doesn't mention them.
