For me, personally, I find it easier to get written descriptions of what is being done along with examples. The problem with that is you only get to see the results of the steps, not how they're actually carried out.
the step by step tutorial is good when you already have the basics of the techniques. But if you don't have a clue what you are doing, they are not entirely helpful as the chance is pretty high that they leave out (very) minor steps which are clear to the artist but not to the reader. The video tutorial doesn't leave out anything unless the artist uses many shortcuts and doesn't mention them.
