With the way we're going, 500 years is pushing it IMO. No way we'll last 50K--we don't learn from our mistakes, and we change too slowly to survive (mental change, not physical). We don't adapt...we destroy.

and dump all the crap we get flying in space when the earth is ruined,..

a more clean idea would be better thought

We’ll definitely survive 2012 as that’s been blown out of proportion, its just the end of a cycle (the earth goes through many cycles) according to researchers. So unless we destroy ourselves, then I recon so.
