Modern Art is by definition any piece of art that takes a substantial period of time longer to explain than it did to create

It provides a good study fro those who have learned to appreciate it, and I understand where a lot of it comes from, but I personally find most of it ridiculous,

after visiting the MoMA in berlin - i had modern art overkill. unfortunately most of it is simply out of my way to see things. there's pretty neat stuff but 70% of all is... nothing for me. ;)

Modern art should make you chuckle at how clever it is, or make you marvel at who something so simple has changed so much in a new perspective. Things like the urinal on its side and the tar room are a marvel to see and really are clever pieces of work.

Making a light turn on and off is a load of bullcrap. There are very few modern artists who are actually decent.

an unmade bed, a disected cow(or was it a three legged cow), bananas, cow shit(or whatever animal) to me that isn't art.

Its just stupid and the work of somebody who has no ideas whatsoever

It truly depends on the piece. A chair you pulled out of a dumpster and display is not art. You did not do it. You did nothing by display it.

Some of it is art and I appreciate that. Sometimes it isn't and often those pieces are a mockery of what is truly art. That annoys me. There is always an exception to the rule.

Generally, I dislike it. But sometimes a surreal bit of abstract catches my eye. I voted I do like it. :)

Art is art. Some suits my taste, some doesn't.

I wouldn't discount seeing something based on it's category. Some things can be amazing regardless of the style of art they fall under.

Modern Art. Right now, I don't think many people know what is it now, cause we're currently in the transition of Art.

The History of art goes through a cycle of Conceptial to Scientific to Conceptial.

Right now we're leaving the conceptial to the scientific.

An eg of this Scientific Art is the Guy who has 2 extra (Cybonetic) limbs (Arms incl. Hands)) and draws different stuff with each limb.

Another is some woman who changes her appearance again and again using cosmetic surgery.. how does she afford it... lots of people with lots of money pay lots of money to see it happen.

And then there is those trying to make art using Microorganisms...

We're entering a whole new world of Art.

There are always acceptions to this, but for the most part, I really can't get into the whole "look! I've flung paint randomly!" that the rich people run up to and say "BRILLIANT! I'll take it!" Groxx, you said it best, the name's selling...or the fad is selling, but not the works.

Well, it really depends upon the piece in particular but if you're just going for a generaliaztion, I would say that i thas it's place and that for the most part the artists are trying just a little to hard to be different. Still, there are certainly pieces that are head and shoulders above conventional works. Essentially, it's all really instance specific. :)

the category "Modern Art" is so incredibly broad, I don't think this really fits that well.

Some, I like. There are certain styles/people that always have great stuff, and there's some things where it's just a bunch of circles, totally abstractly placed. The ones that are obviously totally random, I honestly hate. Those sell because the "artist" is selling his name, not his works.
