Are you using an AO pass as well? It looks really good.

Thanks man, no i didnt use AO, just final gather and GI, i think its the soft shadows that have given it that effect in some of the renders.

For the amount of detail you're doing, AO will definitely make all that modeling pop. The pass is really fast and easy to do.

great model, but aren't 3 mio. polygons a little too much for that? xD

The difference engine alone was around a million, you cant see most of the gears and screws from here, but there are a lot of them.

How did you achieve the rainbow effects?

I cheated, because mental ray doesnt support proper spectral shine, Cebas FinalRender does though, i used a custom reflect map for the glass and settled at around a 3.5 IOR.

Oh nice. I think there are a few hacks to get a similar look in MR - Zap has something about that one his website if I remember right....

render time?
Reply
:iconhameed:
Hameed Featured By Owner Aug 30, 2012   Digital Artist
1280x720p takes approx 1hrs 2mins per frame on a 6(12)core alienware, i am still working on optimization, might share the max source at some point in the future, you could test it on your own machine, it obviously really depends on how fast that is.

Also it is just over 3 million polly's, and it was rendered in Max2012 with mental ray.

Correction that's 1hr20mins per frame, painful.

Yea, finalRender would really bump that down... finalRender for me has really cut render times on stuff that would take MR forever to do...

I love FR, but, i learned not to use it for models i might share in the future since it is very expensive, i did the Lunar Rover with that and found very few people downloaded the free model [link] since they dont have FR.

I got mine for a good bargain, as a student in college, they offer fR for like 1/9th the normal price if I recall correctly... it's be a year or so...

Looks really good, is all polygons or there are normal map?

A little critique if possible:
I didnt noticed there was a seat, untill i open'd the link you provided. I think its a bit small, or try make it noticabale if you think this too.

Really well done work!

All polys , over 3million of them check out the clay renders here for an idea of the geometry detail. There is so much detail the seat is essentially hidden away until you see the whole thing at high res.
