I love Georges version too, i went with this as a 3d project since it is more intricate in design.

Even if I prefer the George Pal's version about the Time Machine, I prefer clearly that one.

I love the details on things such as the period style batteries, and the Babbage mechanical computer. What a wonderful movie prop!

For the amount of detail you're doing, AO will definitely make all that modeling pop. The pass is really fast and easy to do.

Thanks man, no i didnt use AO, just final gather and GI, i think its the soft shadows that have given it that effect in some of the renders.

The difference engine alone was around a million, you cant see most of the gears and screws from here, but there are a lot of them.

I got mine for a good bargain, as a student in college, they offer fR for like 1/9th the normal price if I recall correctly... it's be a year or so...

I love FR, but, i learned not to use it for models i might share in the future since it is very expensive, i did the Lunar Rover with that and found very few people downloaded the free model [link] since they dont have FR.

Yea, finalRender would really bump that down... finalRender for me has really cut render times on stuff that would take MR forever to do...

I cheated, because mental ray doesnt support proper spectral shine, Cebas FinalRender does though, i used a custom reflect map for the glass and settled at around a 3.5 IOR.

Correction that's 1hr20mins per frame, painful.
Reply
:iconhameed:
Hameed Featured By Owner Aug 30, 2012   Digital Artist
1280x720p takes approx 1hrs 2mins per frame on a 6(12)core alienware, i am still working on optimization, might share the max source at some point in the future, you could test it on your own machine, it obviously really depends on how fast that is.

Also it is just over 3 million polly's, and it was rendered in Max2012 with mental ray.
