Deap Sea Sub WIP by Hameed Deap Sea Sub WIP by Hameed
Download contains a larger preview.

I am working on two different underwater scenes at the moment, one of the scenes required 'An artificial light source' so i did some research and decided to make this model.

If it looks familiar to some of you its because its based on the Russian designed sub known as MIR-2.

The sub itself is part of a larger more complex underwater scene for a wallpaper i am doing, this model serves only as a lighting source and will likely be barely visible in the final scene so i thought i should submit...

Earlier but larger render:

WOW man - cool! The Mirs and Nautile are my fave deep sea designs. If I had to do my career path all over again, I'd direct it towards being a deep submersible pilot. In some ways it's even cooler than being an astronaut, but has much of the same sense of "exploring the hostile/unknown frontier". However I'd probably play a bit safer than those Mir pilots. I've read too many stories about their crazy antics on a dive - daredevils!

At one point I considered writing a book on the subject of deep submersibles. There's little available on them outside of the technical literature.

Yep, deep sea exploration is very much like exploring outer space, though perhaps a tiny bit cheaper, it certainly seems to require the same levels of engineering to attempt. I have always had a secret fascination with the underwater realms, indeed i decided to do three scenes since i have never done any before, this should form a part of one of them if all goes to plan.

Glad you like it, if you can spot any obvious problems with the engineering stuff let me know, i haven't started to do the final scene yet, i still have room for adjustments etc. I had great difficulty sourcing good references for the handful of subs i did find. This probably has elements for MIR ! and 2 in it.

I don't think I've ever been clear on the engineering differences between Mir 1 and 2? Externally I'm sure most submersibles go through a process of almost constant update and reconfiguration, from project to project if not mission to mission - as did Apollo!

The cool thing (to me) about deep sea exploration is the discover of new (previously unknown) life forms. It's the only way I'd get to practice the equivalent of xenobiology in my lifetime :) I think the general public doesn't realize what an unknown frontier lies right on their doorstep.
